Miss Americana – Taylor Swift (Netflix)

Words. Words matter. Our words enable us, empower us. Our words, withdrawn, defeat us.

I didn’t know anything about Ms Swift outside of “some musician kid who dates and writes songs about breakups.” Then…this.

Sometimes revolutions start from within. Flipping the table of expectations, rioting against the status quo. I can’t wait for my daughter to be old enough to understand this story in hopes that she is enabled to own her identity, to own her words, to secure her voice. The unlikely hero here is the person who withdrew, examined who she was, what she believed in; then, eviscerated the financial system that was feeding on her identity, and kicked the doors down to establish her voice, her words, her right to an opinion.
